Winnie has been married for over 35 years to her college sweetheart and together they have raised four now-grown children and a too-numerous-to-count assortment of dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, turtles and 4-H sheep.  Besides reading and writing, Winnie’s  favorite activities include cooking, exploring flea markets and pretending the growing army of dust bunnies who have invaded her home will disappear if she just ignores them.

Understanding the expectations surrounding you and your presentation is a key factor in pulling off a successful speaking engagement.  There are two kinds of expectations you need to understand and manage - facilitator expectations and audience expectations.

Once you have selected your topic, have your resume together and have located possible speaking opportunities, how do you let folks know you’re ready and willing?

Why is that necessary?  Well a speaker resume is a great tool for growing your opportunities to secure better speaking engagements.   And coordinators for conferences and workshops, who often get flooded with applications and proposals, will use this document to evaluate the potential speakers against each others and against their particular needs.  This may be the ONLY tool they use to decide whether to issue you an invitation or not.

Winnie Griggs here again, back with the next post on speaking engagements.  As promised in my last post, today I’m going to talk about working through the fear.

 In my last post I mentioned that fear of public speaking is very real and very prevalent.   Mark Twain said it best, "There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars".  While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, it’s probably not too far off the mark.

Over the next several months I’m going to be posting about speaking engagements - why seek them out, how to get booked, what to speak about, etc.  Since my personal experience with this subject is in speaking to groups of writers, that’s going to be my main focus.  However, much of this will translate to other type speaking engagements as well.
