This devotional book contains 365 true stories of struggles, courage, and actions of women, children, and men involved in the home front of American wars, in chronological order, from the French Indian War through the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These stories illustrate effective prayers, heroism, volunteer efforts, and daily courage. Special weekend devotions consist of original words from a journal, newspaper, letter, or newspaper, and glimpses into life during that era, such as fashion, pastimes, work, and celebrations. Each story includes a coordinated Scripture and a prayer for today’s military, families, or individuals encountering struggles.

Karen Whiting

Karen Whiting, wife of a retired Coast Guard Officer, is an international speaker and former television host. She is the author of sixteen books, including the popular inspirational craft series for tween girls, God’s Girls; Secrets of Success for Women Time and the Home (AMG Publishers) and a daily devotional for women, The 365 Most Important Bible Passages for Women. Karen is a Blue Star Mother. She and her husband Jim have been active members of Officers’ Christian Fellowship for over thirty years and currently help with OCF ministry at the US Naval.

Jocelyn Green

Jocelyn Green, the wife of a former Coast Guard officer, is an award-winning author, freelance writer, and editor. She is the author of Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (Moody 2008), and Faith Deployed . . . Again: More Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (Moody 2011), along with contributing writers. She is also co-author of Battlefields & Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq/Afghanistan (AMG Publishers 2009). Her first novel, Wedded to War, will release from River North (an imprint of Moody Publishers) in July 2012.

Maximizing Marketing When Speaking

I Love speaking to Moms, Women, Writers, and well, anyone who shares similar passions. I also find that there are many ways books get promoted when I speak, beyond the actual time I stand and talk.

It starts the moment I get a speaking engagement with the meeting planner letting people know I'll be coming and my posting the event to my website upcoming appearances. There are several ways to maximize the promotional possibilities.

 

Persistence

At my first writer's conference I won the persistence award. I wondered if I just asked the most questions and if that was a polite way to say I was a pest. But over time I realize writers need persistence to succeed and someone saw that in me.

I looked at this year's calendar and already see deadlines looming and contracts that look great-more than I ever expected. I look back and realize I persisted and years of hard work matter. Even more, I see other writers I knew from my early beginnings also finding more success over the years as they persist. I watched writers who wrote more eloquently and faster fall away because they gave up too soon or felt overwhelmed by rejection slips.

Whatever point you are at in writing, be persistent. Continue in spite of the many obstacles and rejections along the way. And work to be consistent in writing and professionalism.

Reasons to be a Thankful for Books

It's already Thanksgiving Day. I am thankful today for family (especially my husband who continues to battle breast cancer) and many friends. My family keeps growing-five children and now eight grandchildren.

But I also want to express thanks babout books, including thanks for past rejections and current contracts and for books in general. I'm an avid reader and books opened my mind to many possibilities.

Membership Application Open Season

CAN is open to membership applications until the end of 2011. It’s been great to be part of a group of published authors who help one another with marketing and marketing ideas.

 

Authors Criteria: Two books (at least one of which is still in print) published or contracted with a traditional CBA royalty-paying house (Christian Booksellers Association) OR one book (still in print) published with a traditional CBA royalty-paying house, along with a consistent record of magazine article sales to Christian publishers. Special Consideration: Self-published authors must have at least one traditionally published CBA royalty-paying book alongside his/her self-published book(s) in order to be considered. The CAN board reserves the right to accept or deny applicants at their discretion.

Having survived Hurricane Andrew with half my house damaged and many items blown into the everglades, I know a little about what to expect from a hurricane. Irene is headed my way. It's important back up files and take other steps.

ICRS, Where the Industry Meets

 A few weeks ago I attended the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS). I've been going for more than a decade. One convention hall fills with authors, publishers, sales reps, agents, and store owners, and all the newest Christian books and products. It's an exciting place for anyone who loves books. Many authors sign free copies of their books. I didn't sign this year but  Faithwords gave away a huge stack of my books as I stood and watched them disappear in a few minutes.

    A lot happens at this show.

 

Connecting at Conferences

    There's snyergy when people come together and connect, especially when they share ideas or brainstorm. CAN is all about sharing ideas and connecting authors to authorsand readers. I love networking and making lots of connections as well as building on connections I've already made. For me, writing conferences are the perfect place for connecting with writers. And things happen at conferences--that's where many of my books originated.

Being a Team Player

I’ve been working with one of my editors who wants changes to books I wrote. He sends very gracious messages. I know he wants the best for the book and doesn’t want me upset, but wants to bring out the best work I can do. I’m all for having a better, more saleable product that will reach more readers so I cooperate and rewrite. And I love how the changes have been coming out.

            I’m also working on a book with a co-author. We need to be a team and I love my co-author. That’s how t should be as we work with someone. We pass on information tone another and research/leads that help the other person have some great information.           

            Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12 remind us we are to be team players and work together for the edification of one another and God’s glory.

When editors hear the words, “God gave me every word so nothing needs to be changed” that’s a Fort McHenry sized banner that the writer is not a team player and doesn’t believe God also gave us editors to polish and sharpen a message. Let’s talk about being a team player
