I am so thankful for relationships I've developed with writers, authors, and readers, in the world of publishing. It's a small world in many ways and networking is vital to success. But it's also a place of friendships and connections. So many of my contracts came from relationships I developed. And, when I'm having problems, the friends I've made pray and support me.
Think beyond contracts and what you can get, to what you can give and how you can extend friendship.
Greetings from Sarah Sundin! This interview is especially fun for me, because Karen Whiting got me started doing these interviews on the CAN blog and coached me through many posts. Finally it's her turn to be interviewed! Not only is Karen a multi-published author of various nonfiction books, including devotionals and children's books, but she's a valuable CAN board member, currently serving as our treasurer. I've benefitted from her wisdom and humor and heart in our e-friendship, and I know you'll enjoy what she has to share with us today.
Karen, how did you get into writing?
For many years people suggested that I write about all the activities I dreamed up for my children, and I ignored them all. However, God started nudging me to write when I went to a retreat to pray. There God gave me a vision and I received a painting of the vision the next morning (it was the flip side of my breakfast placemat - everyone received a unique painting). So I started writing.
My goodness. It would be hard to ignore a call like that! So how many books do you have published?
I'll have sixteen by the end of this year. Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front: From the French and Indian Wars to the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is my newest release. In a few months, the next one, My Mini Dream Room, will release.
CAN authors, retailers, and other groups are preparing for Christian Store Week. Check your local store to see if they will have special events during September 28-October 8 (it is really longer than a week).

I ’ve spent a lot of time this month with other writers as well as editors and retailers. I spoke at the International Christian Retail Show in early July and attended two conferences. The trade show continues to decrease in size but the energy and hope abounded. The publishing industry has done more to partner with author organizations.
Articles tend to reach far more readers than books. That makes it important to write articles for magazines, especially ones that include author bios or links and mention the title of a book. The articles promote the books.
I enjoy writing articles. I also help authors in CAN write for MTL (More to Life) magazine that's published by the Munce Group (CAN partners with that group to reach out to independent Christian book stores).

Jocelyn Green, the wife of a former Coast Guard officer, is an award-winning author, freelance writer, and editor. Again: More Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (Moody 2011), along with contributing writers. I Love speaking to Moms, Women, Writers, and well, anyone who shares similar passions. I also find that there are many ways books get promoted when I speak, beyond the actual time I stand and talk.
It starts the moment I get a speaking engagement with the meeting planner letting people know I'll be coming and my posting the event to my website upcoming appearances. There are several ways to maximize the promotional possibilities.
