This devotional book contains 365 true stories of struggles, courage, and actions of women, children, and men involved in the home front of American wars, in chronological order, from the French Indian War through the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These stories illustrate effective prayers, heroism, volunteer efforts, and daily courage. Special weekend devotions consist of original words from a journal, newspaper, letter, or newspaper, and glimpses into life during that era, such as fashion, pastimes, work, and celebrations. Each story includes a coordinated Scripture and a prayer for today’s military, families, or individuals encountering struggles.

Karen Whiting

Karen Whiting, wife of a retired Coast Guard Officer, is an international speaker and former television host. She is the author of sixteen books, including the popular inspirational craft series for tween girls, God’s Girls; Secrets of Success for Women Time and the Home (AMG Publishers) and a daily devotional for women, The 365 Most Important Bible Passages for Women. Karen is a Blue Star Mother. She and her husband Jim have been active members of Officers’ Christian Fellowship for over thirty years and currently help with OCF ministry at the US Naval.

Jocelyn Green

Jocelyn Green, the wife of a former Coast Guard officer, is an award-winning author, freelance writer, and editor. She is the author of Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (Moody 2008), and Faith Deployed . . . Again: More Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (Moody 2011), along with contributing writers. She is also co-author of Battlefields & Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq/Afghanistan (AMG Publishers 2009). Her first novel, Wedded to War, will release from River North (an imprint of Moody Publishers) in July 2012.

This week I received an email from an editor that surprised me. I met with the editor last March at a conference and submitted some requested manuscripts but heard nothing. Evidently my submission made it into the accepted folder but in changing secretaries the company missed sending me a contract. This week the editor checked for the contract before preparing to put the article into an upcoming issue, found the error, and emailed me. The article is a new twist on something they like to publish and I hope readers enjoy it.

This unexpected Christmas acceptance adds a final touch of blessing from God to end the year.

I love surprises and each acceptance always surprises me in some way.

Book Review on Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives

  

I have a friend whose husband is deployed in Afghanistan. I've been searching for the perfect gift to let her know not only how much I appreciate her husband's service to our country, but also to recognize her faithful service, too. With Faith Deployed, I've found it the perfect gift.

Jocelyn Green and her army of been-there, walked-a-mile-in-your-shoes writers, have packed a lot into this little book. Each two-page devotional is a morsel of food for thought and spiritual nourishment. Not being a military wife myself, I was surprised at how the book affected me. In it I found a new depth of appreciation for what these women go through as each daily anecdote ties directly to the day-in and day-out lives of these unsung heroes. In many ways, they are no different than we are as they have fears, hopes, and dreams. They long to honor God with their lives, but are also seeking to balance that with a love for their military husbands and the country they serve together.

Each devotional includes a Scripture, a 2-page anecdote, a few questions to ponder, and a prayer related to the topic.

Through this book, I know my friend will be ministered to in a way I'm not able. In fact, so many of the books I looked at offered nice stories and gave great advice, but Faith Deployed goes deeper. It connects biblical principles to the real needs these keepers of home front share.

I know my friend will find in the pages of this book, a new set of friends, and a closer walk with the One True Friend who never leaves nor forsakes. What more could I want for my friend?

 

 

 

Book Review on Direction by Cheri Cowell

This is Jocelyn Green, and today I have the pleasure of offering a book review of Cheri Cowell's  Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life. Many times, it’s easy to discern a good choice from a bad one. But when neither option is bad or wrong, how does one know which path to choose? While most of us would prefer the proverbial “handwriting on the wall” to show us the way, that kind of unmistakable message from God is rare. But according to Cowell’s book, that’s OK. We don’t need it. In fact, instead of trying to guess what God’s will is, she writes, we should instead focus on discerning His “way.” When we know God’s way, we’ll be better able to choose our own.
