Greetings from Sarah Sundin! Summer is here, and what better way to welcome the season than by visiting with the author of ultimate beach reads? CAN Publications Coordinator (she writes our excellent newsletter) and two-time Carol Award finalist, Julie Carobini writes about "Faith, Flip-Flops, and Waves of Grace."
To welcome summer, ALL Julie's seaside novels are on sale on Kindle this week only (June 18-22), and her first novel, Chocolate Beach, is free on Kindle! For more details, visit Julie's blog or go straight to Amazon.
Julie, what were you doing before you began your writing career?
I studied Hotel and Travel Management, and I worked as a tour and travel sales manager for a resort in Ventura, California.
How did you get started in your writing career?
After my son was born, I poured out my angst about motherhood into an essay...and it was funny. That story, Baby, Cordless Phone, and Me, was published by Expecting Magazine (an offshoot of Parenting) - three times.
Chocolate Beach was the first book I had published. The first book I wrote was never published; however, I'm glad about that. (It wasn't very good.)
I have two bad "starter novels" myself. (Please burn them when I die). Julie, what other novels do you have published?
Chocolate Beach and Truffles by the Sea (Bethany House), and the Otter Bay series from B&H - Sweet Waters, A Shore Thing, and Fade to Blue.
Why did you choose to write women's fiction?
I started off writing chick lit, but now I write women's fiction with a touch of romance. I love books about complicated relationships because, well, that's real life. What's even better, though, is seeing how my heroines navigate and eventually conquer those complications.
Creating word pictures that draw readers in, stringing words together until they zing.
Where do you get your story ideas?
Life! My recent story, Fade to Blue, is set in a real place - Hearst Castle - and although the story is fiction, there are plenty of moments that will ring true for readers who have struggled with divorce. Love this story.
How do you balance career and family?
It's a struggle, but my family is very good to me. If they weren't supportive, I couldn't do this.
What are you working on right now?
I'm writing a seaside Christmas story right now. I'm also editing several novels for B&H Fiction.
What's your favorite book?
Secret Garden - Love that book!
What are you reading right now?
Mitford Bedside Companion. I'm a huge Jan Karon fan.
When you're not writing, what are you likely doing?
Jogging at the beach with Charlie the Dog.
If you weren't a writer, what would be your dream job?
Editor. Oh, wait, I already do that...
If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?
What three personal qualities are most important to you?
Love, laughter, faith.
What is your life verse?
Colossians 3:23: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men."
Great verse! Thanks for sharing with us, Julie!
Writing for Him,
