Greetings from Tricia Goyer.
I did something pretty crazy recently. I asked one of my publishers if I could give my books away for free. It all started when I bought a Kindle earlier this year. I discovered that every week there are books--awesome Christian books--that I could download for free. I noticed a few more things:
1. When an author gave away a FREE Kindle book, the sales went up for the author's print book of the same title.
2. When a book stopped being FREE, people kept buying it and it remained on the PAID Kindle books.
3. When readers got a FREE book, they were introduced to a new author and wanted to read more from that author.
4. Readers don't have to own a Kindle to get a FREE book!
Thankfully my publisher thought it was worth trying out, and we offered my novel From Dust and Ashes for free. Here's what I posted on my blog:
From Sept. 20th – Oct. 4th Amazon will be giving away a free Kindle download for my first historical novel From Dust and Ashes. This book was born after a chance meeting with Marta, an Austrian historian, which inspired my imagination and sparked this story of liberation.
AND you don’t even have to have a Kindle to get it!
Here are the links to the pages for this awesome free application for
your PC, Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Just search for the title, download and
enjoy!

Is it working? Yes! I've noticed my Amazon rankings lower, which means people are buying books. I've also seen Facebook message and Tweets that people are downloading, reading, and loving that. Getting word-of-mouth marketing like that is worth giving something away FREE!
Maybe it's worth talking to your publisher about.
Tricia, thanks for the info, especially the links to download free books if you don't have a Kindle. Awesome!
Your book had already had a print release, correct? Have you ever considered releasing a manuscript that had not been traditionally printed first, solely to boost sales of your other books?
