Monday Blessings from Gail Gaymer Martin at www.gailmartin.com
I was speaking to a friend about marketing, and she said something that triggered an idea for this blog. How often do you take time to read a magazine you’ve already read? Obviously rarely or never would seem logical. What would you benefit from looking at the same ads, the same articles and the same photographs? Time is precious, and when you pick up something to read you want it to be worthwhile–something fresh and interesting.
The same holds true for a website or blog. How often do readers drop by your website and see the same photographs, the same information, the same layout? They may come back one more time, but soon they’ll give up and find a new "magazine."
We owe it to readers to keep our websites and blogs fresh. This means updating. Even if you only have one new release a year, try to add something new to your website homepage every couple of weeks or no longer than a month. Add a new photo, focus on a special event where you’re speaking or booksigning, add a blog feature where you talk about new ideas you have for a novel or some event where you’ll be featured. Make the effort to stay current and update.
Blogs are easier. They don’t need a webmaster or tremendous work. Dropping a few words to your readers about events in your life, thoughts and dreams you’ve had, photographs of a booksigning or a speaking engagement is not difficult. It takes only minutes. I’ve learned that unless I add a new blog entry at least once a week I lose readers. Readers are a gift and we owe them a few minutes of time to update and provide something that makes it worthwhile for them to come back time after time. Faithful readers will be eager to drop by and see what new thought you’ve added to your site.
