We are a group of writers who belong to CAN, the Christian Authors Network, who are passionate about writing. As published authors, we long to share our victories and struggles with regards to marketing and promotion. No one really ever told us about this part of the business of writing, so, like you, we are learners. Won't you learn alongside us?
Welcome to CAN Marking blot on another spring Monday from Gail Gaymer Martin. www.gailmartin.com Last week I talked about an article written by Sandra Beckwith called, "Five Ways to Promote Fiction." In my comments last week, I talked about using location to connect with readers. Sandra suggested, for example, if you’re writing an historical novel set in a specific area, you might write local magazines or newspaper feature articles on the most romantic historical sites in the area or the most unique facts you learned in your research. But your efforts have probably produced other interesting nuggets of information besides location that opens doors to more promotion. Here’s another one.
Susan Meissner here to welcome a special guest to We CAN! Promote Our Books. Chip MacGregor of MacGregor Literary has some great marketing wisdom to share with us today. There's a a lot great stuff here so we'll take it in two doses, half this week, and half next. Chip is a savvy literary agent, but he's also a writer, and a former editor and publisher, so he can see book marketing from every angle. Here, then, are some great marketing insights from an industry insider. Take it away, Chip.
Kathi Macias here, checking in once again in between trips to talk about the old tried-and-true adage, Be Prepared! This excellent advice is easily applicable to effective marketing, whether you are on the road or at home in your own little community.
Before we market our books, we have to get them in print. Before we see them in print, we have to write them, then sell them to an agent and a publisher. It's an arduous journey. What one thing can we cultivate in ourselves that will help us on both journeys--in publication and marketing?
Perseverance. Don't let the word scare you. You need to embrace it. It will take you far...
My daffodils are in bloom so spring s coming. It's still been colder than I like, but it's great to see signs of warmer weather. The sunny blossoms make me smile and brighten my day. When we invest in people, hopefully we brighten their days. Last week I mentioned investing in people. I want to continue that topic in how that applies to some key marketing people-store owners and media people.
A blessed Monday after Easter to you from Gail Gaymer Martin. www.gailmartin.com Last week I talked about God’s blessings and timing on our work, but as I said, we can only hope the Lord wants to bless our books and so we will continue to do what we can toward promoting them. I read an article the other day that talked about five ways to promote fiction. Though the focus was on fiction, I believe some of the ideas can work for non-fiction as well. Instead of covering all five, let me tell about one that I know works.
I'm a few days late posting (yes, my Dad is still in the hospital and I'm home, but my brother and I had a lot of chatting with doctors and decisions we had to make regarding some medical procedures-so I invested time in my family first. Next week two grandchildren and two of my sons and their wives will visit-one grandson coming is the blond one in the photo.)
Networking and word of mouth are the best ways to spread a fad or get sales going. So it makes sense to invest time in people.
From the Bible we know that the gospel spread as one person told another about Jesus and witnessed about his miracles, his saving power, and his love and forgiveness. What Jesus did was of such great value that people wanted to spread the good news.
This CAN marketing blog is about marketing. But sometimes God brings a little correction to me as I market and write. Today's post is that correction. I pray it blesses you.
